Moroni 9-10

Moroni 9-10 Study Guide – to be discussed May 28
Day 1: Read Moroni 9:1-6
1. Who wrote Moroni 9 and why? In Moroni 9:3, where it states ‘they do not repent,” to whom does the word “they” refer?



2. What evidence is presented that indicates the Spirit of the Lord had ceased striving with the people?



3. What is our ultimate labor in this life? Who will help us?



Day 2: Read Moroni 9:7-19
4. Give two reasons the armies of Nephites and Lamanites performed atrocities of war upon their prisoners.



5. For what did Mormon pray? Why do you think he was especially concerned about the widows and fatherless women?



6. According to Moromon, what two qualities were the Nephite armies lacking? What did they delight in?



Day 3: Read Moroni 9:20-26
7. Why couldn’t Mormon recommend his people to God? Who could he recommend? Why?



8. Why did Mormon believe he would see Moroni again soon?



9. List what Mormon encouraged Moroni to do and feel in spite of their dire circumstances.



Day 4: Read Mormon 10:1-7; 1 Nephi 1:20; D&C 50:21-25; 2 Nephi 32:3
10. When did Moroni finish his record? To whom did he write?



BONUS: Compare Moroni 10:3 with 1 Nephi 1:20. What major theme in the Book of Mormon is recognized at both the beginning and the end of the book?


11. List what Moroni exhorted future readers of the Book of Mormon to do.

12. By what power may all men know of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon – and all things? (See also 2 Nephi 32:3.)



BONUS: Read D&C 50:21-25. List ways in which the Book of Mormon edifies you or gives you light.



Day 5: Read Moroni 10:8-19; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; D&C 46:11-26
13. List gifts of the Spirit recorded by Moroni.



14. Compare Moroni’s list of spiritual gifts with those in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 and D&C 46:11-26. Realizing these lists are not exclusive, which gift is unique to Moroni’s list?



15. According to D&C 46:12, why are we given divers gifts?



Day 6: Read Moroni 10:20-29; 2 Nephi 28:1-2
16. How do gifts of the Spirit help build faith, hope and charity? Are these attributes also gifts of the Spirit?



17. What can cause the end of spiritual gifts?



BONUS: Can real good be done without the Spirit? Why or why not?



18. Read 2 Nephi 29:1-2 with Moroni 10:27-29. How do God’s words “hiss forth” today?



Day 7: Read Moroni 10:30-34; 2 Nephi 25:23
19. List again from these verses what Moroni would exhort us to do, and his reasons for so counselling us.



20. When is God’s grace sufficient to make us whole? (See also 2 Nephi 25:23.)



21. What is the purpose of the Book of Mormon? What would you like to say to Mormon and Moroni if given the chance?

Moroni 7-8

Moroni 7-8 Study Guide – to be discussed May 21
Day 1: Read Moroni 7:1-9; Psalm 95:6-11; Matthew 11:28; Jacob 1:7-8; James 1:6
1. Whose sermon is recorded in Moroni 7? What did he speak concerning? To whom did he speak?



2. Read Psalm 95:6-11 (with footnote 11b), Matt. 11:28, Jacob 1:7-8. What is the “rest of the Lord”? The word “rest” is used twice in Moroni 7:3. Is there a difference between the first and the second usage? What do faith and hope have to do with entering into that rest?



BONUS: What does a “peaceable walk” look like?


3. Underline “real intent” in Moroni 7:6 and 9. How does James 1:6 help explain the term “real intent”?



Day 2: Read Moroni 7:10-19; D&C 84:47-48
4. Do you think Mormon believed people are either all good or all bad? What gifts do we have to help us discern good and evil?



5. Underline the words “inviteth” and “enticeth” in Moroni 7:12-13. List ways Satan invites and entices today. How does the Lord invite and entice?




6. How can we become children of Christ? (See also D&C 84:47-48.)



Day 3: Read Moroni 7:20-32
7. According to Mormon, what is the relationship between faith and discernment?



8. By what two things can we begin to exercise faith in Christ?



9. What are the errands of angels? (See also 2 Nephi 32:3, Alma 29:1-2.)



Day 4: Read Moroni 7:33-48; 1 Peter 4:8
10. How do we know the day of miracles has not ceased? Will miracles ever cease?


11. What is the relationship between faith and hope? Between faith and humility?



12. What is charity? How can we possess or develop charity in our lives? Why is it so important? (See also 1 Peter 4:8.)



BONUS: Why doesn’t charity ever fail?


Day 5: Read Moroni 8:1-9
13. Who wrote Moroni 8? What was the occasion?



14. What point of controversy does this epistle particularly address? Is it still controversial today?



15. How did Mormon know it was “solemn mockery before God” to baptize little children?



Day 6: Read Moroni 8:10-21
16. Why don’t little children need to repent?



17. What qualities did Mormon say the proponents of infant baptism lack?



18. In what way(s) does infant baptism deny the pure mercies of God?



Day 7: Read Moroni 8:22-30; 1 Peter 4:6
19. Look at the footnote for Moroni 8:22d. What did Mormon mean when he wrote all those who are “without the law” are alive in Christ? Who might this include? (See also 1 Peter 4:6.)



20. What are the first fruits of repentance?



21. How does perfect love endure? What is the natural consequence of the denial of great knowledge?

1. Why did Moroni write more after abridging the Jaredite record?

2. Read Mormon 8:7-8. How did Moroni refer to the Lamanites in Moroni 1:4. What does this tell you about Moroni?


3. Read D&C 27:5, with headnote to section 27. What keys did the Lord commit to Moroni’s safe keeping?

Day 2: Read Moroni 2; 3 Nephi 18:36-39
4. Read 3 Nephi 18:36-39. What was the setting for the events recorded in Moroni 2?

5. Why did the Savior call each apostle by name? In whose name were they to give the Holy Ghost?

6. What were the Nephite 12 commanded to do before they exercised their priesthood?

Day 3: Read Moroni 3; D&C 20:38-44
7. Read D&C 20:38-44. Why do we call apostles elders?

8. What impresses you most about Moroni’s message as it relates to the church being a “house of order” (see D&C 88:119)?

9. In whose name were the disciples of Christ to ordain? By what power?

Day 4: Read Moroni 4
10. Who did Christ designate to administer the emblems of his sacrifice to the church?


11. List what we ask of God in the sacramental prayer over the bread.



12. List what we covenant to do as we partake of the bread.


Day 5: Read Moroni 5; D&C 27:2-4
13. Read D&C 27:2-4. Why don’t we use wine as a sacramental emblem today?


14. Look up the words “sanctify” and “sacrament” in a dictionary. Although we ask the Father to sanctify the emblems of the sacrament, what is our part in making these emblems sacred?


15. We commit ourselves twice in each sacrament prayer to “remember.” List ways in which we “always remember him.”


Day 6: Read Moroni 6:1-6
16. What was required of the elders, priests and teachers before they were baptized?

17. What does a broken heart have to do with preparation for baptism? Preparation to partake of the sacrament? Why are the names of baptized people recorded?


18. Why do we have so many meetings?


Day 7: Read Moroni 6:7-9
19. Why do you think it was (is) important to reject unrepentant sinners from full fellowship in the church?

20. What do you think Moroni meant by the term “real intent? In Moroni 6:8?
