Ether 14-15

Ether 14-15 – to be discussed May 7
Day 1: Read Ether 14:1-10; Helaman 12:18-21; Helaman 13:18-19
1. What was the nature of the great curse upon the land? Read Helaman 12:18-21 and 13:18-19. Why did the Lord exact this curse?

2. How did Coriantumr lose his kingdom? How did Gilead lose the kingdom to Lib?

3. List life lessons we can take from these verses. In other words, what should we avoid if we want to keep our “kingdoms” intact?

Day 2: Read Ether 14:11-24
4. Review Ether 11:17, 13:20-22, 27. What seems to have motivated Coriantumr to fight? What was he defending?

5. List the generals and/or kings Coriantumr battled.

6. What two things motivated Shiz in his pursuit of Coriantumr? Why was he so greatly feared?

BONUS: Draw a map showing the land of Moron, the wilderness of Akish, the plains of Agosh, the (east) seashore, and the movements of Lib’s, Coriantumr’s and Shiz’s armies.

Day 3: Read Ether 14:25-31
7. Moroni wrote, “the Lord did visit them in the fullness of his wrath” (v.25). Who was killing off the Jaredites? How did the Lord exercise his wrath?

8. Who invited whom to battle on the hill Comnor? How was the invitation extended?

9. Why didn’t Coriantumr die from loss of blood? Was this a blessing or a curse?

Day 4: Read Ether 15:1-9
10. How many of Coriantumr’s people had been killed in his wars (conservative estimate)? Why did he mourn?

11. Do you think Coriantumr experienced a mighty change of heart? Why or why not?

12. Why do you think Coriantumr continued to fight? What motivated his people?

Day 5: Read Ether 15:10-17; Mormon 6:6
13. Read Mormon 6:6. What is another name for the hill Ramah? (See also Index listing, “Ramah, Hill.”) What two gatherings took place in this area?

14. How many years did Coriantumr and Shiz take in preparing their armies for a final battle?

15. List who fought in the Jaredite armies. Did they have a choice? Why or why not? Why did they mourn?

Day 6: Read Ether 15:18-25
16. Why did the Spirit of the Lord cease to strive with the people? What were the results of this?

17. Ether 15:22 describes the people as “drunken with anger.” List the signs of substance abuse. How does anger unabated diminish agency?

18. Review Ether 15:15-24. How many days had the people fought until there were 32 left for Shiz and 27 for Coriantumr? Could the survivors have stopped fighting at this point?

BONUS: Review Ether 9:12. When had nearly total annihilation occurred before in Jaredite history? What was the motivation then?

Day 7: Read Ether 15:26-34; Omni 1:19-22, Mosiah 8:7-11
19. From Ether 15:27, how many hours did the remaining “large and mighty men” fight before they fainted from loss of blood?

20. Although Coriantumr was protected by Ether’s prophecy (Ether 13:21), was this an easy battle for him? Do you think he could have repented at any point and saved his people? Why didn’t he?

21. Read Omni 1:19-22, Mosiah 8:7-11. By what two means did the Nephites learn of the history of the Jaredites?

BONUS: In the end, the prophet Ether was able to come out of hiding. How do you think he felt when he saw that the words of the Lord had all been fulfilled? What mattered most to this last Jaredite prophet?
